A Gathering of Artists

Claytor Lake Dublin VA

Claytor Lake, Dublin VA

I enjoyed the company of some very talented quilters this week who had  assembled for several days of camaraderie, creativity and inspiration.  Their quilter’s retreat at nearby Claytor Lake is an annual event and I was treated to lunch and a sampling of their remarkable textile art.

Among the fabrics and designs displayed by the quilters, I found many of my favorite earth tones and nature elements. Like me, they had been inspired by Nature and had brought trees, birds, landscapes and even wild turkeys (one of my favorite watercolor subjects) to life in  fabric.

Artists share a creative bond and inspiration that transcends the differences in their methods and motivations.

Just as “Children are the living messages we send to a time we will not see.” (John W. Whitehead) an artist’s  work carries a piece of their soul into the future;  a special place, feeling, or moment in the artist’s life.

How many of us treasure an antique quilt or a special painting because we can sense the touch of the artist’s hand and heart.

Whenever there is a gathering of artists a creative excitement fills the air and Autumn is a time of gathering.

Each weekend’s festivals are an opportunity to join in a celebration of the creative spirit.

Wishing you a week filled with beautiful patchwork moments!
