Nature’s Fireworks

There will be fireworks in the air this week in celebration of the 4th of July.  There have been fireworks at my house all week long.  Firefly works that is.  The fireflies (aka lightening bugs) have been gathering in the trees in mass over the past couple of weeks.

It always amazes me that the hundreds of brilliant flashes of light are coming from tiny insects.  They’re actually not flies or bugs.  They are beetles.  Little beetles whose luminescence lights up the sky with a colossal burst of sparkling lights.

I’ve spent sleepless hours watching the nightly show.  I tried without success to film the spectacle.  When the twinkling fades it will be my watercolor that captures  the magic of the moment.

Happy 4th!  Enjoy the show!
